Defensive Line:
As usual, Herron was disruptive off the edge against the pass and disciplined in setting it against the run. He stepped up his game in the playoffs helping the 'Rocks get to the state semifinals after a terrible 4-6 regular season showing.
The Notre Dame commit anchored the defensive line for the 5A state champion South Warren Spartans with 14 sacks, four forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.
Reed may have been the most disruptive defensive player in the state last season. He recorded 18 sacks, forced eight fumbles, made 164 tackles, 37 of them behind the line of scrimmage. He lined up all over the defensive line for John Hardin and his 164 tackles as a down lineman are absurd.
Ethan Wine lead the state with 21 sacks as a junior while forcing four fumbles, recovering two.
Linebackers:
Weaver recorded 10 sacks, three interceptions, and 70 tackles leading Marion C. Moore High School to an 11-2 and the state semi-finals.
Jenkins recorded 15.5 sacks and 85 tackles from the linebacker position. The 6-foot-3, 228-pound George Rogers Clark product surprisingly holds zero offers.
In his first season as a varsity starter, Casey was a consistent force as a pass rusher and edge rusher. His explosive get off caused teams to roll the passing pocket away from him and call running plays to the opposite side of the field.
Defensive Backs:
Bush picked off six passes for Frankfort and returned two of them for scores. He was also a big play threat on the offensive side of the ball catching 27 catches for 798 yards (29.6 YPC) 9 touchdowns.
I've watched Payton make plays since his sophomore season and he saved his greatest season for last notching eight interceptions, returning four of them for touchdowns.
Trel Riley is a lock down corner and a blanket safety who took away half the field from opposing offenses. Last season he led the state with nine interceptions. This season his numbers dropped because teams refused to throw it at him.
Bush was the total pack at safety for South Warren, helping them win the 5A state title over powerhouse Covington Catholic. Bush is a devastating tackler and a ball hawk. He intercepted seven passes and returned two for touchdowns, slamming the lid on opposing passing attacks all season long.
