#1 Ballard beats #11 Scott County 96-85

The Ballard Bruins were in control for most of their game against Scott County. But a late Cardinals run made it a four point game before Ballard ballooned their lead back to 11 for a 96-85 opening night victory.

Game Recap

The game started out even as the Bruins and Cardinals found themselves tied at 5 early. However, Ballard went on a 18-3 run from that point to put them up 23-8, the run was capped by a Raeshaun Robinson dunk as Quentin Snider got the assist.

Scott County then went on a 9-0 run, behind 6 points from Austin Kindred. But, Ballard closed out the quarter with 5 straight points to give them a 28-17 lead.

Scott County opened the second quarter with back-to-back threes by Trent Gilbert and Teddy Ware. But Ballard answered right back as Rijad Kovacevic and Quentin Snider hit threes to make it 34-23.

Ballard closed out the half on a 15-9 run. They led 47-32 at the half, Snider led them with 16 points and Martin chipped in 11. Scott County was led by Trent Gilbert and Teddy Ware, who had 12 and 10 points respectively.

The Bruins and Cardinals played nearly even in the 3rd quarter, but Ballard stretched their lead out to 19, 73-54, going into the 4th quarter.

As stated above the Cardinals made the game close in the 4th quarter behind 21 points from Trent Gilbert. The Cardinals went on a 11-2 run through the first three and a half minutes of the quarter to make it 79-67 Ballard with 5:30 left in the game.

From that point the Cardinals went on a second run to make it 85-81 with 1:54 left. Raekwon Long scored all four of his points during this run. However, the joy was short lived for Scott County. The Bruins quickly made it an 8-point game and didn't look back. Scott County only scored 4 more points as #1 Ballard won 96-85.

Quentin Snider and Kelan Martin had 32 and 29 points. Trent Gilbert led all scorers with 40 points, while Teddy Ware added 20 points of his own for Scott County.

There were more than a few story lines that came out of this game.

- Trent Gilbert scores 40 points.

Gilbert is one of the guys that could lead the state in scoring. He made a big mark on opening night, dropping 40 points on the #1 team in the state. Gilbert had 6 threes and also hit 12 free throws.

- Jalen Perry injured for Ballard.

Jalen Perry missed the entire second half with a high ankle sprain, their is no timeline, at the moment, for his return.

- Bruins let big lead slip away.

Just like in the state title game a year ago the Bruins had a big lead that evaporated in the second half. The Bruins got a scare last night, but they need to make sure this doesn't develop into a trend.

Ballard: Snider 32, Martin 29, Dow 11, Robinson 7, Kovacevic 6, Perry 5, Wilson 4 and Douglas 2.

Scott County: Gilbert 40, Ware 20, Kindred 12, Martini 8, Long 4 and Murray 1.
