Ballard and Scott County headline opening night

And just like that it's high school basketball season in the Bluegrass.

I can tell you who is enjoying the start of the 2013-14 season the most. That would be Mercer County as they begin their season in the Bahamas in the KSA Events Beach Bash Atlantis.

Dark horse to win Mr. Basketball Brent Bach and Augusta begin their season tonight against St. Patrick.

The best matchup of the night is Scott County visiting Ballard. The Bruins come in to the season as the No. 1 team and are looking to avenge their loss to Madison Central in last year's Sweet Sixteen finale.

For Scott County it is the debut of 7-foot center Raekwon Long. If Long is to guard Ballard's Kelan Martin or vice versa that would be a fun one to watch. Martin is considered a very tough guy to defend, though the length of Long could hinder his performance.

Scott County's real worry could be who is going to play the point as well as guard the state's top prospect Quentin Snider. The Cardinals have a question mark at the point and that could be their downfall in this early season matchup.

The Bruins are the top team in the state as well as the Seventh Region. The Cardinals are the top team in the Eleventh Region this year. It doesn't get much better than this to open up the season.
