Bullitt East tops Butler
Suda E. Butler Traditional High School hosted a game Wednesday night against Sixth Region foe Bullitt East.
The Chargers came firing out of the gate jumping out to an early lead and looking like a better put together ball club. It didn't hurt that they were blessed with a significant height advantage.
Butler is merely a roster full of guards. Bullitt East on the other hand has a more traditional lineup and that played into their game plan wonderfully Wednesday.
The Chargers were in control for the majority of the ball game. Though in the fourth quarter things became a bit interesting when Butler's Will Johnson got the hot hand and cut the Bullitt East lead to three with a little over three minutes left in the game.
Bullitt East would hold on to the lead with the help of their senior leader Rhett Troutman who tallied 17 points and a complete effort on the defensive end all night.
The Chargers stat sheet also read two double-doubles one from Tyler Bacon and the other Ezra Troutman.
A ways to go
It was easy to see both teams are still shaking off the dust from the offseason. At times both teams looked lethargic and out of sync.
Bullitt East is further along than the Bears at this point. Butler just received a large portion of their team back from football and they are still putting the pieces together. The Chargers seem to be searching for their identity since replacing Willis, (Rusty) Troutman, Young and Rakes.
Both teams have high ceilings and the Bears have the most room to grow seeing as how most of their roster is still in the physical shape it takes to play football, not basketball.
Butler needs a Will to win
There is no question that Butler looked their best on the floor when junior Will Johnson was running the show.
Johnson, however, is one of the guys on the roster coming back from football. He had to be taken out once and hobbled down floor a hand full of times because of cramping.
Getting back in basketball shape needs to be a object of concern for all of the guys coming back from the gridiron, especially Johnson.
Solving the puzzle
Bullitt East has so many nice pieces to their team. Starting with the Troutman cousins, this team's identity will probably be a hard nosed bunch that plays sound defense which will be complimented by pure scorer, Tyler Sharpe.
During Bullitt East's worst stretch of the night Wednesday, the Chargers were failing to see the floor thoroughly and it is likely one more pass would have found an open man.
As the season comes to a close and both teams are dialed in, these teams will be securely in the top half of the Sixth Region.
