There's a big game Friday night between two state championship contenders when the Bowling Green Purples visit Poplar Level road. They will meet the St. Xavier Tigers for the pair's third consecutive interclass matchup. 5-A Bowling Green has beaten the 6-A Tigers in both of those games by a combined score of 66-51.
In last year's game, two-star Purples' wide receiver Nacarius Fant broke his school's single-game receiving mark for yards with 235. He also has some strong intuitions about the game Friday night. " . I think we have a big chance of winning." He starts. "Not saying we will for sure but we should."
Fant continues " the teams they play don't do what we do against their offense ... they haven't played an offense anything like ours as far as a good quarterback, running back and wide receivers "
The WKU-commit then acknowledges St. Xavier as a worthy opponent saying "Don't get me wrong, they are really big and physical but we have big players and they are just as good or better." Also saying, "They are a really good team and have a good history and there's a lot of talk about their new coaching staff. We are just trying to put that all behind us and do what we do and try to win the game."
Talk then turned to his school of the future and their win over Kentucky. "WKU pounded it down UK's throat and threw all over them. WKU should've won by more but bad coverage at the end and early turnovers kept UK in it. I really enjoyed it and can't wait to play in WKU's offense."
Before committing to the Hilltoppers Fant was seeing interest from Kentucky and their new staff, but ended his recruitment before receiving an offer. When asked if that made the victory a little sweeter he responded, " it does at the end of the day but I put all that behind me and did what I had to do."
Fant ended by downplaying the importance of their 31-game winning streak. "It's lovely to be able to accomplish that but a loss Friday wouldn't end our season. I would have to move forward to get the ultimate goal and that's a state championship."
Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. Friday and it should be a battle of two top-notch programs.
