The 2017 class is shaping up to be extremely solid with a lot of talented freshman to be. Kentucky Preps will be taking a look at some of the best freshman to be in a series called Freshman Spotlight. We'll be asking each of the players 20 questions to get to know some of them as they start their high school career.
2017 Magoffin County Guard Trenton Russell made an impact for the Hornets last season. He averaged 12 points, 7 rebounds, 1 steal and 2 assists per game. Russell was also named Honorable Mention at Crossroads Elite 125 Camp over a week ago in Nashville, TN.
Q. (Donald Yaste): What High School will you be attending?
A. (Trenton Russell): Magoffin County High School
Q. (DY): How has this Summer prepared you for this coming high school season?
A. (TR): I've played in varsity high school summer league, I've been training at the HIT Center and I've been working hard on getting stronger and quicker.
Q. (DY): What expectations do you have for yourself going into this high school season?
A. (TR): I want to be more of a leader. Our team is young and I have varsity experience from last year so I hope to help some younger players to step into their role.
Q. (DY): What are your expectations for your team?
A. (TR): I expect to WIN. I'm hoping to get into regional play this year.
Q. (DY): What is your current height and weight?
A. (TR): I'm 6'4" 178 pounds.
Q. (DY): Describe your style of play?
A. (TR): I love to penetrate to the basket and I'm not afraid to shoot the 3.
Q. (DY): What are you strengths?
A. (TR): Size and quickness.
Q. (DY): What are your weaknesses?
A. (TR): I need to get stronger and I'm working on my vertical.
Q. (DY): What do you hope to accomplish through playing basketball?
A. (TR): I would love to win district, regionals, and be heading to Rupp. I would also like to have college paid for.
Q. (DY): Have any colleges reached out to you at this point? If so who?
A. (TR): There are a few who've shown interest.
Q. (DY): What is your greatest fear?
A. (TR): Failure.
Q. (DY): What is your best characteristic?
A. (TR): I never give up.
Q. (DY): What is your nickname and how did you get it?
A. (TR): I don't really have one.
Q. (DY): What is one hidden talent you possess?
A. (TR): I love to draw.
Q. (DY): What is your favorite quote?
A. (TR): If you're trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I've had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it. - Michael Jordan
Q. (DY): What is your favorite food?
A. (TR): Pizza.
Q. (DY): Who is your biggest role model?
A. (TR): My parents they work so hard. They always make sure I get to practice, games,camps and travel with AAU. It's hard sometimes but they do it no matter what.
Q. (DY): What's your dream school?
A. (TR): University of Kentucky.
Q. (DY): Who is your dream coach?
A. (TR): Coach Calipari.
Q. (DY): Whose game do you model yours after?
A. (TR): Kevin Durant.
