The 2017 class is shaping up to be extremely solid with a lot of talented freshman to be. Kentucky Preps will be taking a look at some of the best freshman to be in a series called Freshman Spotlight. We'll be asking each of the players 20 questions to get to know some of them as they start their high school career.
2017 Sheldon Clark G Dylan James is one of the best shooters in his class and was named the Top Shooter at Blue Chip Camp this Summer. James averaged 13 points and 8 rebounds in helping lead Sheldon Clark to the 15th Region finals last season. He averaged 10 points and 5 rebounds this Summer for the Derby State Thoroughbreds.
Q. (Donald Yaste): What High School will you be attending?
A. (Dylan James): Sheldon Clark High School.
Q. (DY): How has this Summer prepared you for this coming high school season?
A. (DJ): I played basketball for the Derby State Thoroughbreds this summer. We had a great season (31-9) and played against some of the best freshmen in the nation. I have been in the gym nearly every day working to improve my game and to get stronger. I have been lifting, jumping rope and working on ball handling skills.
Q. (DY): What expectations do you have for yourself going into this high school season?
A. (DJ): I would like to lead my team to a regional championship. I'm also closing in on 1,000 varsity points so that's a personal goal of mine for the upcoming season.
Q. (DY): What are your expectations for your team?
A. (DJ): Last year our team was the 15th Region Runner-up. This year I would like to win the 15th Region and play in the Sweet 16.
Q. (DY): What is your current height and weight?
A. (DJ): I'm 6'4" and 190lbs.
Q. (DY): Describe your style of play?
A. (DJ): I play mainly on the perimeter but I can post up and drive to the basket.
Q. (DY): What are you strengths?
A. (DJ): My strength is shooting. I was named Top Shooter at Blue Chip Camp this summer.
Q. (DY): What are your weaknesses?
A. (DJ): My weakness is ball handling but I have spent a lot of time in the gym this summer to improve.
Q. (DY): What do you hope to accomplish through playing basketball?
A. (DJ): I would like to earn a D-1 scholarship for basketball.
Q. (DY): Have any colleges reached out to you at this point? If so who?
A. (DJ): I have been invited to EKU and NKU Elite camps.
Q. (DY): What is your greatest fear?
A. (DJ): Not playing basketball after high school.
Q. (DY): What is your best characteristic?
A. (DJ): My work ethic is my best characteristic. I want to be the best.
Q. (DY): What is your nickname and how did you get it?
A. (DJ): I don't have a nickname.
Q. (DY): What is one hidden talent you possess?
A. (DJ): I don't have any hidden talents but one of my favorite hobbies is four-wheeling or "muddin" as we call it here in the mountains lol.
Q. (DY): What is your favorite quote?
A. (DJ): "I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost more than 300 games. 26 times, I have been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." -Michael Jordan
Q. (DY): What is your favorite food?
A. (DJ): Cheeseburgers.
Q. (DY): Who is your biggest role model?
A. (DJ): Michael Jordan, I believe he is the best player to ever play the game of basketball.
Q. (DY): What's your dream school?
A. (DJ): University of Kentucky.
Q. (DY): Who is your dream coach?
A. (DJ): Coach Calipari.
Q. (DY): Who's game do you model yours after?
A. (DJ): Dirk Nowitzki. He has the athleticism and shooting ability to play both inside and out.
