The 2017 class is shaping up to be extremely solid with a lot of talented freshman to be. Kentucky Preps will be taking a look at some of the best freshman to be in a series called Freshman Spotlight. We'll be asking each of the players 20 questions to get to know some of them as they start their high school career.
The first player we'll be spotlighting if 2017 Russell County Guard Kel Stotts. Stotts was the leading scorer for the Derby State Thoroughbreds team that finished 20th at AAU Nationals. Kel averaged 12.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game this Summer for Derby State.
Q. (Donald Yaste): What High School will you be attending?
A. (Kel Stotts): Russell County.
Q. (DY): How has this Summer prepared you for this coming high school season?
A. (KS): I have played against some excellent competition. This summer has also showed me that I need to get stronger. I've been running, lifting weights, doing push ups and stuff like that. It has showed me my strengths and weaknesses that I need to work on in the off season.
Q. (DY): What expectations do you have for yourself going into this high school season?
A. (KS): Be a leader for my team.
Q. (DY): What are your expectations for your team?
A. (KS): Try to reach deep in the region and go to the state tournament.
Q. (DY): What is your current height and weight?
A. (KS): I'm 6'1" 160 pounds.
Q. (DY): Describe your style of play?
A. (KS): I love attacking the basket and pulling up for the mid-range and 3. I like a fast pace energy on the court.
Q. (DY): What are you strengths?
A. (KS): My strengths are shooting and I bring a lot of energy to the game.
Q. (DY): What are your weaknesses?
A. (KS): My weakness are my ball handling, but you can always work on that.
Q. (DY): What do you hope to accomplish through playing basketball?
A. (KS): First I want to play D1 basketball on a full scholarship. After college I will continue to pursue playing basketball overseas or here in the states.
Q. (DY): Have any colleges reached out to you at this point? If so who?
A. (KS): Tennessee Tech, Western Kentucky, UT Martin and Eastern Kentucky have shown interest.
Q. (DY): What is your greatest fear?
A. (KS): Getting injured and never being able to play again. I have a teammate that was in a car accident recently and is in serious condition, and might not be able to play again. This makes me thankful that I can work on my game.
Q. (DY): What is your best characteristic?
A. (KS): My personality and work ethic.
Q. (DY): What is your nickname and how did you get it?
A. (KS): My nickname is Kel, my original name is Kalob. My nanny gave that to me on a ride back home one day.
Q. (DY): What is one hidden talent you possess?
A. (KS): Fishing and I'm pretty good at it. Haha!
Q. (DY): What is your favorite quote?
A. (KS): "Don't chase people. Be yourself, do your own thing and work hard. The right people-the ones who belong In your life- will come to you and stay." -Will Smith
Q. (DY): What is your favorite food?
A. (KS): Bacon cheeseburger.
Q. (DY): Who is your biggest role model?
A. (KS): A person I never met would be Micheal Jordan. I love his game and he's just a driven person that never gives up on himself. Then the person that I do know is Doug Pyles. He's great person then on the other hand he's very successful business man, smart and loves his family.
Q. (DY): What's your dream school?
A. (KS): Kentucky.
Q. (DY): Who is your dream coach?
A. (KS): Coach Cal.
Q. (DY): Who's game Do you model yours after?
A. (KS): Ray Allen. He can shoot the lights out and and pull up from mid range too.
