Already standing at 6'3" Eli Wright (Apollo/2016) is easy to pick out of a crowd. He's even easier to pick out on the basketball court with his athleticism often overwhelming his competition. Every time I've seen Wright he's improved some part of his game. At AAU state his improved ball handling and shooting stood out and he dominated against most every kid in the 15U age group. However, his WKY Sonics team bowed out early in tournament play and a lot of focus shifted away from his performance.
The 6'3" 175 pound G is extremely athletic (see photo) and has an improving handle and jumper. While both his handle and jumper are improving he is still striving for consistency in both. Wright is already one of the best 2016 kids in the state and his combination of size and athleticism gives him room for plenty of growth. Western Kentucky has also already noticed his potential and shown interest in the talented sophomore to be. Wright plans to camp with the Hilltoppers as well as UK and EKU this Summer. He hopes that more schools will show interest in him after those camps and the July evaluation period.
Wright will team up with Sam Sergeant (2014) and Hunter Shelton (2014) to lead Apollo this coming season. The trio of Seargant, Wright and Shelton will give Apollo three players with division one interest in their backcourt. Wright feels Apollo should battle for a 3rd Region title with their backcourt and supporting cast. "I think we'll do real good, I think we have a chance to go to state."
I caught up with Eli a couple weeks ago and we talked about Apollo basketball, AAU, his game and more. Check out the full interview below.
